Food Savvy People

People who love good food always love life. If you love good food, come and meet my friend Laodong, a stay-home mom who spent a lot of time studying and cooking the most delicious food for her son. She is really good at family cuisine,dumplings, noodles, baozi, and more, and we often have gatherings at her home. In the morning, Yuhua will take you to a local food market to get immersed in the most lively place in Beijing and learn to differentiate a variety of Chinese cooking spices and ingredients. Laodong will then greet you at her private home in hutong. You will learn how to cook a typical Chinese dish and dumplings. Celebrate with a dumpling banquet and family cuisine.

Find the hidden gems that you would not get to see or experience had you not chosen the Beijing Way program. Try the most unusual drink and it might turn out to be the most tasty one for you. I would say“Those who have not tried Douzhier have not really been to Beijing”. Visit Uncle Zhu and his wife’s traditional courtyard house and have a feel of the real Beijing hutong life. Follow Yuhua closely to enter the former administrative building complex of Republic of China under the stare of the security guards at its gate, pretending you are not a visitor. Explore the underground living space showroom of a low-key Chinese top designer,built on the site of an old print factory. Embrace the traditional and the modern.

 

Before dusk, sneak into the former residence of a Prince mansion where Yuhua grew up and admire the best-preserved Xiulou in Beijing, before any Ayi finds us and lets us out.

Sharing of Life Experience & History

Real people and real life stories, especially those from other cultures, are like mirrors which could give us a deeper reflection of our authentic selves. We will visit an old hutong couple who have protected the nearly three-hundred-year-old ceiling paintings in their family for more than 30 years.

 

Uncle Zhu and his wife’s traditional courtyard house is one of the best preserved private courtyards in Dongsi area. Let’s have a sip of tea and Beijing snacks while listening to Uncle Zhu talking about the legendary stories of his grand grandpa and his nine daughters.

 

Have fun doing role play of historical figures with your family or friends based on true stories in history, in one of the best-preserved traditional courtyards in Beijing. A mysterious gift will surprise you and bring you a most fun and unforgettable memory of Beijing.

 

Visit an eccentric collector, who dedicated all his life collecting hutong artifacts from the past dynasties. His life mission is cultural protection and inheritance. His street vendor chanting demonstration brings you back to the 1930’s or 1980’s of old Beijing hutongs.

Art & Architecture Experience

My Old House at Prince Qing's Mansion 12

 

If you have an eye for beauty, this is a perfect choice for you. We will take you to the most delicate and beautiful hidden gems in the hutongs. You will first visit a grand Prince Mansion originally built in 1730. It is also called “the deserted Forbidden City”because the stone lions in front of its gate are even larger than the ones in front of the Forbidden City. Then you will get to admire the nearly three-hundred-year-old ceiling paintings in a hutong house that survived the cultural revolution only because the room was used for storage at that time.

 

Next, you are invited to meet with the uncrowned king of Chinese ceramics and his secret private museum of ceramics. You will be able to touch the astonishingly beautiful old ceramic shards dating back to hundreds even thousands of years ago. Lastly, I will show you the best-preserved Xiulou in a Prince Mansion I grew up.
