Moments of the Beijing Way Experience

It says that those who have tried Douzhier will become real Beijingers. Congratulations to Sally and Ina!

I guess it is not easy to entertain a Mother-in-Law all the time! What a spontaneous play!

It is such a beautiful moment@the Smallest Hidden Hutong Museum in the world.

Jing Music of Nearly 600 Years

There are so many things changing so fast in our life, but some are simply not. The nearly 600 years Jing Music at Zhihua Temple in Beijing is one of the things that stay.

Originated from the Ming Imperial Court and introduced to Zhihua Temple in 1444, Jing music has remained as it was nearly 600 years ago!

The Beijing Way Experience is proud to present to you one of the three precious records of Jing Music tunes, recorded respectively in 1991, 2003, 2017. Great thanks go to our friend Wang Hui, one of the 27th generation musicians.

*Qingjiangyin, recorded in 1991, performed by Monk musicians of the 25th and 26th generation.

Throughout all those years, Jing Music has been carried on from generation to generation by Monk musicians. It touched my heart.

Good news, there will be a once in a year opportunity to listen to live Jing Music and a variety of ancient Chinese music on June 8, 9, 10 at Zhihua Temple Musical Festival.

Tickets are free of charge. Reservations by phone call at 6525 3670. Seats are available but running out fast!

Let it flow

We do not intend to make any beautiful moment at the Beijing Way Experience, we are the beautiful moment. We let it flow. Enjoy the beautiful moments captured during our Beijing Way Experiences.

Get on the rooftop and touch this hundreds of years old mythical animal figurine with your hands.

Sitting together at Gandpa Li’s home like a family gathering, gaze at more than three hundred years old well-preserved ceilings.

One of the few Shigandangs remained in Beijing, a stone tablet erected at the entrance of a lane to drive away misfortune or evil spirits.

Immerse into a world of Chinese ceramics, and get touched by Uncle Qu’s spirit.

We deserve the best, don’t we? Absorb the essence of the Chinese wisdom and health, treat self a little better from small things in daily life.

Let it all flow naturally. Hope to see you at one of our Beijing Way Experiences!

Enjoy the Spring!

Live and Play Like a Child

This is one of the heart-touching moments captured at the Beijing Way Experience. We live and play like a child. The world is so big, with so many different faces, different places, whereas the world is also so small, we all have the same heart, a child-like heart. The intimacy between people, the most deep and soft part is kept in everyone’s heart.

A few years ago, Kai and I went to Paris and stayed overnight at my friend Matilde’s home, right next to Versailles. We walked to her apartment at dusk, it was a very old apartment, I still remember the creaking steps nowadays. We had a “Cheese banquet” at home and Matilde strongly recommended us to try all her favorite cheese. Even we were not big fan of cheese, we started to like it. We tasted wine, sang songs, played with her little boy Mael, and even talked with him with my little French. By the time we woke up the next morning, a room key was left to us and Matilde went to work already. It was one of the most beautiful memories in our life.

Another time, we visited Qinghai and got lost in a National Park. A Tibetan family offered us a place to stay. A Granny turning a prayer wheel in her hand in the bed, asked her grandson to bring a huge bason of roasted potatos to the table in front of us, and a lot of buttered tea. We sat around the bonfire and chatted the night away. If Kai had not had too much buttered tea and got a fever that night, it would have been even a more perfect night.

At the Beijing Way experience, you are not a visitor at all. You belong to here. You play and laugh like a child. You are the beautiful moment.

在“北京味儿体验”,你哪里是什么访客,你属于这里,你玩着,活着,像个孩童一般。你就是最美的一刻。

The Moments

Life is made up of moments, the moment of listening to the pigeons whistling in the blue sky sitting in a sway chair, completing a piece of art work by your hands, savoring Mom-made food, laughing loud with your kids, the moment of a very familiar but long gone story, and many many more… The Beijing Way Experience is sharing with you all those heart-touching moments in Beijing.

China’s First Securities Exchange

China’s first Securities Exchange founded by the Chinese people in 1918, is now a local residence shared by quite a few families. When we entered the building, sunlight beaming through the windows, it felt like a sacred place, a church, perhaps. Suddenly an Ayi who was cooking in the public kitchen on the first floor lobby, looked up and gave us a shout, “Your guys scared the shit out of me!” Then she continued with her cooking as if nothing had happened.

Dust in the air. The past glory, fortune, prosperity… and everything has turned into dust.

Ma Yinglong Pharmacy

It was such a coincidence to meet the third generation of the Ma Yinglong family who were known for a famous eye medicine in China since the early 20th century. I personally approached Mr. Ma and thanked him for his family’s eye medicine who helped to heal my daughter’s eye disease faster just a few months ago. By looking into the history, I found it interesting that one of the founders of the Gest Library at the Princeton Universty, Guion Moore Gest, also used the Ma Ying long eye medicine in the 1920’s while in Beijing. It gave him some temporary relief. In response, Gest started to collect Chinese works on the treatment of eye diseases, and medical books in general. It was this collection which formed the beginning of the Gest Library.
